Soccer story inspiring
I want to compliment both the writer and editor of the Oct. 29 article titled “International flavor colors soccer pitch.” Both the quality of the article and its front-page placement was a significant statement of values at the core of what it means to be human.
O’Brien captured well the spirit of the camaraderie as well as the quality of the persons playing the “beautiful game.” While I am not a devoted follower of soccer, the author vividly shared the stories of each of these marvelous human beings who not only love the game and play it expertly, but are making worthy contributions to America, from teaching kids soccer, to maintaining long-term marriages, to driving trucks for Waste Management. In the context of our times, this is newsworthy and a source of inspiration for all of us to be better people.
The writer captured well what it means to love life, respect one another, contribute to family and the common good, and do good work. More often, these kinds of stories should make the headlines. It’s probably also a statement of what we, as a culture, are losing sight of in this season of our national life together.
