The newly accredited Washington State University medical school has spots for 60 people in its inaugural class in August, but 600 applications from interested students have already arrived.

WSU received the preliminary accreditation it needed in October, which allowed it to begin accepting applications. The college has also been granted membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges.

The new Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine at WSU was formed after the school broke off its longtime partnership with the University of Washington School of Medicine. The state Legislature passed a new law last year allowing the creation of another medical school.

The University of Washington’s medical school is now partnering with Gonzaga University. The schools welcomed 60 students to their inaugural class of students this summer.
