Teen killed and another injured crossing Highway 28 near East Wenatchee

By Dee Riggs Wenatchee World

EAST WENATCHEE – Two teen friends who live on opposite sides of Highway 28 were struck by vehicles as they crossed the highway Tuesday evening.

One died and the other was injured in the 5:25 p.m. incident.

“The 15-year-old was struck first in the eastbound lane,” said Trooper Brian Moore. “His friend ran out to check on him and was struck by a westbound vehicle, pretty much as he ran into the highway.”

Alejandro Pulido 15, was killed when he was struck by a pickup truck heading toward Rock Island, according to a State Patrol report. James R. Delp, 16, of East Wenatchee was then struck by a car heading into East Wenatchee. Delp was transported to Central Washington Hospital. He was in satisfactory condition Wednesday. Moore said Delp will probably need surgery on his leg and ankle.

Both boys attended Eastmont High School, where Pulido was a sophomore and Delp is a junior, Moore said.

Both boys were transported by ambulance to Central Washington Hospital. Moore said Pulido died as medical personnel were preparing to airlift him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The boys were headed to Delp’s home across the highway in the dark in the direction of the Columbia River. They were struck near the intersection of South Tyee Avenue, Moore said. That intersection is about 4 miles south of East Wenatchee.

Neither driver was injured and neither will be cited, troopers said in a press release. The driver of the pickup was Aerin M. Sipe, 22, of Wenatchee. The driver of the car was Dawn L. Detering, 56, of East Wenatchee.
