System drags down nation

As a point of reference, consider JFK’s speech delivered at the commencement ceremony of American University. Compare that work with the stuff that is coming out of the mouths of our present presidential candidates.

I weep when I think of our country’s future. It’s not the candidates “fault.” They are just opportunists. It’s something in the nature of our system that has lead to this sad state of affairs. Maybe the system is in decline … too many holy wars that are unwinnable and no industrialized medieval-style wars like World War II.

It is well-proven that our system works well for that sort of thing, providing unification and focus.

  • We reserve the right to reject letters that are not factually correct, racist or are written with malice.
  • We cannot accept more than one letter a month from the same writer.
  • With each letter, include your daytime phone number and street address.
  • The Spokesman-Review retains the nonexclusive right to archive and re-publish any material submitted for publication.
