Memories of Farragut

I always enjoy the letters to the editor, and the one about the celebration at Farragut State Park (Sept. 23). It brought tears to my eyes, as I recalled going there with my mother to see my brother Bill.

The year was 1944, and he had joined the Marines just before he was 16, being one year older than me. We prayed and wrote so much to him as he so bravely fought. The Japanese in Iwo Jima, etc. When we saw him at the hospital in Farragut, he was not my brother anymore. He was so sick from what was then called shell-shock. We saw the same look in our son’s face just before he left for Vietnam in 1967. He suffers from Agent Orange growth, bring crippled and in pain.

Watching the presidential debates last night brought back all those memories. Our country is the greatest. If we become informed and vote and pray as our brave young men did, we will stay great.
