Ferris takes advantage of turnovers, top U-Hi 35-6

The Ferris football team played turnover free, pulling away from the University Titans 35-6 in a 4A Greater Spokane League game Thursday at Albi Stadium.

University suffered from a case of the turnovers. The Titans had three interceptions and two lost fumbles.

The game was a perfect opportunity for two young teams to work on things for next season.

But one thing the Titans must fix is turnovers. The Saxons’ first two touchdowns were set up by U-Hi mistakes.

Hunter Ferguson recovered a fumble for Ferris on U-Hi’s first possession. Five plays later, Jonny Via dashed 29 yards untouched to put the Saxons ahead 7-0.

Via forced the fumble that Ferguson recovered.

On the first play of the second quarter, Cyrus Colliton recovered a fumble for Ferris after the referees ruled that U-Hi quarterback Zak Sherick’s arm wasn’t going forward when he was hit.

On five of Ferris’ eight plays, Via carried the ball, capping the drive with a 2-yard burst to put the Saxons ahead 14-0.

After forcing U-Hi to punt, Ferris (3-4, 1-2) converted a third time when quarterback Logan Bunker hit receiver Brock Bozett on a 37-yard TD. Bozett snagged the pass, spun and juked, then outraced a pair of Titans to the end zone. A two-point conversion extended the Saxons lead to 22-0.

U-Hi (2-5, 0-3) got the board when Sherick hit Josh Brantley for a 12-yard TD connection on 4th-and-eight.

A U-Hi interception set up the Saxons’ final score. Bunker hit Braden Brock from 20 yards out for a 35-6 lead.

Via finished with 103 yards after rushing for 75 yards on 11 carries in the first half.

Running back Terrell Sanders led the Titans with 82 yards on 23 attempts.
