A water main burst Tuesday morning, blowing a hole in a street and flooding one home’s basement in Spokane’s East Central neighborhood.

Water crews were called to a block of Hartson Avenue between Chandler and Grant Street, one block south of the Rockwood Clinic, at about 7:30 a.m., said city spokeswoman Marlene Feist.

She said the city is working with one homeowner whose basement was flooded as a result of the broken main.

Work on the repair took longer than anticipated and that block of Hartson was expected to be closed until at least Wednesday, the city said in a news release. Drivers are asked to use alternate routes.

The cast iron main, which was 6 inches in diameter, was installed in 1927.
