Area roundup: No. 18 Cougars volleyball swept by No. 17 Stanford

Kyra Holt had 11 kills with 10 digs but No. 18 Washington State fell to host No. 17 Stanford 25-18, 25-21, 25-21 in Pac-12 play on Friday in California.

It was the 45th double-double in Holt’s career. Nicole Rigoni added 20 assists with nine digs for the Cougars (17-6, 7-4 Pac-12), who had a two-match win streak snapped.

Kathryn Plummer led Stanford (14-6, 8-4) with 17 kills and seven blocks.

Courtney Schwann had 11 kills, Bailey Tanner added 34 assists with 10 digs and No. 7 Washington (19-3, 9-3 Pac-12) swept California (8-12, 2-8) 25-18, 25-23, 25-19 in Berkeley, California.

Becca Mau had 17 kills with seven digs and Idaho (9-15, 4-8) beat Eastern Washington (11-10, 6-6) 25-21, 25-18, 24-26, 25-19 in a Big Sky match in Cheney.

Idaho’s Haylee Mathis recorded her first career triple-double with 10 kills, 14 assists and 18 digs.

Emiko Kahler had 16 kills with 11 digs and visiting Whitworth (18-5, 12-1) topped Puget Sound (14-7, 9-4) 25-23, 14-25, 25-15, 25-17 in Northwest Conference action in Tacoma.

Erin White had 49 assists and Cassandra Mendoza added 11 kills.

Brooke Bell had 15 kills and North Idaho (17-12, 12-2) swept CC Spokane (21-13, 8-4) 25-14, 25-17, 25-23 in NWAC play in Coeur d’Alene.

The Cardinals are one-half game behind first-place Walla Walla (24-7, 12-1) in the East Division.

Women’s soccer

Elexis Schlossarek scored two goals and Idaho (10-4-4, 7-1-2) defeated Idaho State (7-13-0, 4-6-0) 3-0 in Moscow, Idaho.

The Vandals locked up sole possession of the Big Sky Conference regular-season title. Idaho hosts the tournament in Cheney next week.

Schlossarek scored in the 57th and 84th minutes, and Clara Gomez had a goal in the 67th minute.

Eastern Washington raced out to a 2-0 lead, but eventually fell to Montana in overtime 3-2 in the teams’ regular-season finale in Cheney.

Jenny Chavez and Chloe Williams both had first-half goals for the Eagles (11-4-3, 5-3-2 Big Sky), but the Grizzlies (9-5-5, 5-2-3) tied it in regulation before Aspen Peifer’s golden goal won it.

Williams’ goal extended her single-season program record with her 14th. Williams also improved on her all-time career goals (31) and points (79).

Eastern is seeded fifth in the conference tournament and will play Montana.

Natalie Kennedy and Maddie Gonzalez both scored second-half goals and host Santa Clara (7-6-4, 4-2-1 West Coast) shut out Gonzaga (6-8-2, 2-5) 2-0 in California.

Men’s soccer

Nick Ulowetz had a hat trick, including the game-winner in overtime, and Gonzaga (8-6-1, 2-2 WCC) came from two goals down to defeat visiting San Diego 3-2.

San Diego took a 2-0 lead in the 22nd minute, but Ulowitz scored on a header in the 34th minute, tied it in the 52nd and won it with his fourth goal of the year in the 92nd minute.

Cross country

Washington State men finished fifth and the women 11th at the Pac-12 Cross Country Championships at the Randolph North Golf Course in Tucson, Arizona.

The No. 7 Colorado men’s team won its sixth consecutive Pac-12 Conference title and the No. 1 Colorado women’s team claimed its second straight title.

Sam Levora was the top WSU men’s placer in 15th in 24:50.2. Oregon senior Edward Cheserek made history as the first four-time men’s individual champion.

The Cougar women were led by Devon Bortfeld in 37th in 21:37.4. Washington’s Amy-Eloise Neale (20:22.9) won the title.

The Cougars next head to the NCAA West Regional, Nov. 11, at the Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento, California.

Gonzaga’s women and men’s teams both placed fourth in the West Coast Conference championships at Tecolote Shores Park in San Diego.

Jordan Thurston paced the GU women with a fourth-place finish in 20:58.7. It’s the junior’s second straight all-conference finish.

Portland rallied for the women’s conference title.

The Zags’ men placed fourth, the fifth straight season Gonzaga has placed in the top four.

Dillon Quintana led Gonzaga with a 16th-place finish. He crossed at a personal-record 25:04.6.

BYU placed five runners in the top seven to ease to defend its conference title.

Next up for Gonzaga is the West Regionals on Nov. 11.

Eastern Washington’s Sarah Reiter finished second overall and Idaho’s Kara Story took ninth at the Big Sky Conference Championships at the University of Idaho Golf Course in Moscow.

Reiter finished with a time of 17:23, just nine seconds behind champion Ellie Child of Weber State. In 2014, Reiter took home the Big Sky title as a sophomore and finished eighth last year.

Story earned conference Freshman of the Year honors with a time of 17:59.

Idaho’s women’s team placed fourth, while Eastern finished sixth out of the 12 schools.

On the men’s side, Idaho came in fifth and EWU seventh.

Tim Delcourt paced the Vandals in 19th, while James Breen was Eastern’s top finisher in 32nd.

Northern Arizona swept the team titles.

Both teams will participate in the West Regionals.
