College soccer: Whitworth women crush Carleton College

New Whitworth Pirates women’s soccer coach Bryan Olson didn’t have to wait long to notch his first victory.

The Pirates scored five unanswered goals en route to a 5-1 victory over the Carleton College Knights in a nonconference season opener on Thursday in Northfield, Minnesota.

The Knights took a 1-0 lead just 2 minutes into the match on a goal by Hailey Mair, but the lead lasted just 15 minutes.

Jenna Morris scored to pull the Pirates even in the 17th minute and Arielle Van Peursem netted the first of her two goals on the day in the 34th minutes to give the Whits a 2-1 lead at the half.

Timary Mathena headed in a free kick from Kathryn Bischoff in the 49th minute for a 3-1 advantage.

The Whits put the game out of reach with goals by Kelly Wucherer in the 59th minute and Van Peursem in the 67th minute.

Whitworth will conclude its trip to Minnesota with a match against College of St. Benedict on Friday.
