Newsmakers: Sweden’s Henrik Zetterberg out of World Cup of Hockey with injury

Injured Sweden’s Henrik Zetterberg is out of the World Cup of Hockey because of a knee injury. Calgary Flames forward Mikael Backlund will replace Zetterberg on the World Cup roster.

Suspended Charleston Southern suspended football Jamey Chadwell one game for violating NCAA social media rules. The school said the violation involved impermissible contact on social media with prospective athletes.

Xavier men’s basketball coach Chris Mack said senior guard Myles Davis has been suspended from the team indefinitely, the result of misdemeanor criminal damaging charges filed over incidents with his former girlfriend.

Sidelined Connecticut Sun rookie forward Morgan Tuck will miss the rest of the WNBA season because of a left knee injury. Tuck will have surgery to repair torn cartilage.

Reported New Jersey Devils farmhand Ben Johnson was found guilty of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in the washroom of a Windsor bar in 2013. Justice Kirk Munroe delivered the guilty verdict against the 22-year-old Johnson in a nearly three-hour ruling. The former Windsor Spitfires junior player was released under his current bail conditions until Friday when Munroe is to rule if he’ll be placed in custody pending sentencing.

British Open champion Henrik Stenson shot the lowest score in major championship history with a slight cartilage tear in his right knee.

Signed The Buffalo Sabres re-signed forward Zemgus Girgensons to a one-year $1.15 million contract.

Retired U.S. women’s national team midfielder Heather O’Reilly announced her retirement from international soccer after a 15-year run. O’Reilly will play her final international match on Sept. 15 against Thailand in Columbus, Ohio.
