Woman thrown off car as she attempts to foil car theft

A woman was injured this week after jumping on the hood of her car in an attempt to stop a man from stealing it.

The woman told police she had gotten out of her car in the parking lot of her apartment complex at 1225 E. Westview Court to throw away her trash when a man jumped in the driver’s seat and started to drive away, according to court documents.

Several witnesses said they saw the man driving at high speed through the parking lot and swerving sharply several times in an attempt to throw the woman off the car. She did fall off and one witness said it appeared that the driver may have run over the woman as he made his escape.

Witnesses said they saw the man jump off a second story balcony earlier and some said they spoke to him as he wandered around the parking lot on foot, court documents state. The man was later identified as 38-year-old Lico L. McKinnie.

Responding officers said the the woman had “extreme” road rash on the left side of her body, including on her face, according to court documents.

McKinnie reportedly crashed the woman’s car at Highway 2 and State Route 206. He told police that he was high and was trying to “get away from people who were after him,” according to court documents.

McKinnie has been booked into the Spokane County Jail on suspicion of second-degree assault and theft of a motor vehicle.
