Dogs from shelters in flooded Louisiana bound for North Idaho

From staff reports

Some dogs rescued from Louisiana floodwaters will arrive Wednesday at a North Idaho animal shelter.

Dog Is My CoPilot, an animal rescue group, plans to deliver over 60 dogs to shelters across the Rocky Mountain West, including the Panhandle Animal Shelter in Ponderay. It isn’t yet known how many will go there.

Other dogs will go to shelters in Jackson, Wyoming; Sun Valley, Idaho; and Boise. It’s the longest-distance rescue flight the organization has undertaken.

The dogs come from overcrowded animal shelters in parts of Louisiana hit by flooding between Aug. 12 and 22. They will be transported Wednesday on a Cessna Grand Caravan airplane and are scheduled to arrive at the Sandpoint Airport before 8 p.m.

Dog Is My CoPilot, a nonprofit group, is based in Jackson Hole.

Panhandle Animal Shelter has taken in dogs in other rescue flights. In March 2014, the shelter received 25 small-breed dogs from the Los Angeles County Animal Shelter, flown in by Wings of Rescue, a nonprofit animal rescue group based in Van Nuys, Calif.

To reach Panhandle Animal Shelter, call (208) 265-7297. The shelter is open Tuesday through Sunday, noon to 4:30 p.m.
