Colleges: WSU wins pair at Cougar Challenge

Hailey Bethune’s dozen kills led Washington to a 25-16, 25-11, 25-18 sweep over Maryland Eastern Shore in its early match on Friday at the Cougar Challenge Tournament in Pullman.

WSU swept George Washington 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 in its second match.

The Cougars (7-1) face Idaho on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the tournament finale.

Vandals split two at WSU tourney: Despite a season-high 15 kills by Becca Mau, Idaho was swept by George Washington at the WSU Cougar Challenge, 30-32, 19-25, 21-25.

In its second match, Idaho (4-4) knocked off Maryland-Eastern Shore 25-13, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21.

Gonzaga vs. Nevada in Wolfpack Tournament: Host Nevada topped the Bulldogs 25-14, 25-21, 20-25, 23-25, 13-15 in Reno, Nevada.

The Zags (4-1) play UC Davis and Southern Utah in the tourney’s second day on Saturday.

Eastern Washignton wins in Wyoming: Ka’iulani Ahuna had 15 kills and the Eagles beat Cal State Northridge 25-19, 26-24, 25-20 in the Wyoming Invitational in Laramie. Eastern (4-3) faces Samford on Saturday.

Whitworth loses at Texas tourney: Whitworth was swept by Southwestern (Texas) 22-25, 11-25, 21-25 at the Trinity Fall Classic in San Antonio.

In the second match, the Pirates lost to Trinity 11-25, 23-25, 11-25. Whitworth (3-3) takes on Whittier and Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday in the tournament.

CC Spokane wins two of three at Walla Walla Invite: The Sasquatch swept Green River 25-13, 25-17, 25-15, and Clackamas 25-11, 25-13, 25-14 before falling to Linn-Benton 18-25, 20-25, 11-25 in Walla Walla. CC Spokane (11-6) hosts Centralia on Tuesday.

North Idaho drops a pair: The Cardinals were swept by Northwest at the Starr Corporation Invitational in Twin Falls, Idaho. NIC dropped its second match to Salt Lake CC 21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 17-25, 12-15. North Idaho (4-9) faces Snow and Utah State Eastern on Saturday.

Cheslek signs with Greek team: Former Gonzaga standout Shelby Cheslek recently signed a contract to play for Dafni Agiou Dimitriou in Athens. Cheslek will face former GU teammate Keani Albanez (Athinaikos).

Men’s soccer

Zags beat second ranked team in week: Gonzaga knocked off No. 20 American 3-1 in Washington, D.C. The win gives GU (4-0-1) a second straight victory over a ranked opponent after defeating then-No. 16 Seattle University on Sunday. Gonzaga faces George Mason on Sunday in Fairfax, Virginia.

Women’s soccer

Gonzaga falls in overtime at Utah State: Wesley Hamblin scored the game-winning goal three minutes into overtime to lift Utah State over the Bulldogs 2-1 in Logan, Utah.

Gonzaga (3-2-1) plays at Montana on Sunday.

Washington State ties late: Freshman Morgan Weaver scored in the 89th minute and the Cougars battled with just 10 players for the final 40 minutes as WSU and Texas Christian battled to a 1-1, double-overtime draw in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Cougars (3-2-1) host Seattle on Thursday.

Idaho tops Seattle: Kayla Watanabe scored in the 77th minute to lift the Vandals over Seattle 2-1 in Seattle. Idaho (2-2-2) plays at Boise State on Sunday.

EWU at Cal State Bakersfield: Chloe Williams scored twice and the visiting Eagles beat the Roadrunners 3-1. Eastern (4-1) plays at Saint Mary’s on Sunday.

Cross country

The host Saints won the Carroll College Early Bird in Helena. CC Spokane’s Kaylee Marquart was fourth overall at 20:00:27.
