Area roundup: WSU volleyball sweeps of College of Charleston
The Washington State volleyball team earned its fifth consecutive sweep and eighth consecutive win, defeating College of Charleston 25-12, 26-24, 25-22 at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas on Friday.
Kyra Holt had her 39th career double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs, in addition to one solo block. McKenna Woodford also had 10 kills and contributed nine digs, one ace and three blocks. Taylor Mims led the match with six blocks while scoring on six kills.
WSU (9-1) continues tournament play on Saturday against Virginia at 11 a.m. and host Baylor at 5 p.m.
Idaho splits in home tournament: Sarah Sharp totaled a match-high 16 kills, Torrin Crawford added 12 kills and the Vandals topped visiting Tennessee Tech 25-27, 25-12, 25-15, 25-11 in the Idaho Volleyball Classic in Moscow.
In the night match, the Vandals fell to Oregon State 16-25, 20-25, 16-25. The Beavers swept all three opponents in the tournament.
Idaho (5-7) travels to Montana State on Thursday for its Big Sky opener.
Gonzaga swept twice in Nebraska: In their first match of the day in the Ameritas Players Challenge in Lincoln, Nebraska, the Gonzaga Bulldogs were swept by Creighton 21-25, 21-25, 16-25.
McKayla Ferris had nine kills and Faith Smith had 15 assists for GU.
In their second match, the Bulldogs fell to No. 1 Nebraska 15-25, 12-25, 11-25.
Gonzaga (6-3) finishes tourney play against Montana State on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Whitworth tops George Fox: The Pirates (6-3, 1-0) beat George Fox (2-6, 0-1) in straight sets (25-22, 25-15, 25-22) in the Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Brenna Bruil and Iris Tikhonov had seven kills apiece.
Whitworth hosts Pacific (Oregon) on Saturday at 5 p.m.
North Idaho beats Big Bend: The Cardinals (7-10) won their third match in a row, sweeping the Vikings 25-16, 25-9, 25-13 in Moses Lake. NIC plays at Walla Walla CC at noon on Saturday.
Women’s soccer
Eastern Washington scored three straight goals to overcome an early deficit and beat South Dakota 3-1 in Vermillion, South Dakota.
Chloe Williams became Eastern Washington’s all-time points leader with her fifth goal of the season, which tied it at 1 in the 16th minute. Alexis Stephenson added a goal just before halftime and Kiana Hafferty added her first of the year in the 81st minute. EWU (6-1-1) hosts Idaho State in its Big Sky opener Friday.
Hockey
Kailer Yamamoto scored in overtime to lift the Spokane Chiefs over the Tri-City Americans 3-2 in WHL preseason action in Kennewick.
Hayden Ostir and Jaret Anderson-Dolan had first-period goals for Spokane.
The Chiefs are hosts to the Americans at 2:05 p.m. today at the Arena in Spokane’s final preseason game. They open the regular season on Sept. 24 at Tri-City.
The Nelson Leafs (2-1) edged the Spokane Braves (1-2) 5-4 in KIJHL action.
