Stream on Demand: Netflix gets ‘Zootopia,’ Amazon has ‘The Witch’

What’s new for home viewing on video-on-demand and Netflix, Amazon Prime and other streaming services.

Pay-Per-View / Video-On-Demand

Free State of Jones stars Matthew McConaughey as a disillusioned Mississippi farmer who unites with army deserters and escaped slaves to rebel against the Confederate government. Gary Ross directs this historical drama inspired by real-life events (R). Also on DVD and Blu-ray.

Also new: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows with Megan Fox and Will Arnett (PG-13) and the comedy Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising with Seth Rogen and Zac Ephron (R).

Available same day as select theaters nationwide: the comedy My Blind Brother with Jenny Slate and Adam Scott (R), the thriller I.T. with Pierce Brosnan and Anna Friel (not rated), and the drama Goat with Nick Jonas and James Franco (R).

Netflix

Zootopia (2016), Disney’s animated comedy about a bunny cop (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and a conniving fox partner (Jason Bateman), is one of the biggest hits of 2016 (PG).

The documentary Audrie & Daisy (2016) investigates high school sexual assault and cyberbullying (not rated).

Netflix originals: the anthology comedy series Easy debuts, and Longmire returns for season 5.

More streaming TV: Penny Dreadful: Season 3 brings the Showtime horror series to a close, Gotham: Season 2 and New Girl: Season 5 arrive as new seasons begin on TV, and Luther: Season 4,” Wallander: Series 4 and Call the Midwife: Series 5arrive from Britain.

Amazon Prime Video

The Witch (2015), a “New England Folktale” of Puritans in 17th-century America, is a primal, unnerving horror film (R).

Days after winning two Emmy Awards, the third season of the Amazon original series Transparent debuts.

Also new: Knight of Cups (2016) with Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett (R) and the modern Irish fairy tale Ondine (2009, PG-13).

Amazon Prime Video / Hulu

The Oscar-nominated Sicario (2015) tosses Emily Blunt into the drug war on the Mexican border with Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin (R).

Also new: the documentary Serena (2016) on tennis champion Serena Williams (not rated) and the thriller Captive (2015) with David Oyelowo and Kate Mara (PG-13).

Hulu

The rock-doc The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years (2016) streams for Hulu subscribers days after opening in theaters (not rated).

HBO Now

Director Alejandro González Iñárritu and star Leonardo DiCaprio both won the Oscars for The Revenant (2015), a brutal tale of survival and revenge on the American frontier (R).

The show biz satire The Larry Sanders Show,” HBO’s original buzz series, is now available.
