Idaho Vandals football capsule

Vandals at Rebels

Kickoff: 6:05 p.m. at Sam Boyd Stadium

Records: Idaho (1-2), UNLV (1-2)

Internet/Radio: Mountain West Network, unlvrebels.com; 1280-AM and 1080-AM

Overview: The Vandals finish their nonconference slate with a game that they knew before the season would be crucial for their postseason hopes. After consecutive blowout losses to Washington and Washington State, UI will try to draw even at 2-2 going into its Sun Belt opener next week at home vs. Troy. “It’s a very important game,” coach Paul Petrino said, “and it’s one that I think over the summer you circled and knew it was a very important game.” The last two weeks, Idaho looked like it would give UW and WSU a game for at least a quarter before things fell apart. What’s it going to take to sustain a high level of play? “Part of that is believing you’re going to win,” Petrino said. “And when something bad happens, you’ve got to stay fighting, you’ve got to stay believing and I think that happened a little bit the last two weeks.” UNLV, under second-year coach Tony Sanchez, crushed Jackson State to open the season and was competitive the last two weeks against UCLA and Central Michigan. The Rebels are led by running back Lexington Thomas, a home run threat who had an 85-yard TD run last week, and receiver Devonte Boyd. The Vandals should have quick guard Noah Johnson (concussion) back in the starting lineup. He sat out the last two weeks.
