Mariners Pregame: M’s recall Evan Marshall; lineups and starter matchup

The Seattle Mariners face the Houston Astros in the finale of a three-game series, hoping for their first series win of the young season.

The team recalled RHP Evan Marshall from AAA Tacoma and outrighted RHP Casey Fien to the Rainiers. Also, the team reinstated outfielder Boog Powell and assigned him to Tacoma.

Powell had to be put back on the 40-man roster, necessitating the move to outright Fien. Fien, a veteran reliever, has been ineffectual thus far this season, allowing seven earned runs in 5 2/3 innings (11.12 ERA), with five strikeouts in five appearances. Marshall pitched once for Tacoma and owns a 4-7 big league record over parts of three MLB seasons, with a career 4.50 ERA in 78 innings.

In rehab news, RHP Tony Zych threw a two-inning simulated game at Safeco and could be activated from the disabled list soon.

Mariners Notes

  • In 22 career starts against the Astros, Yovani Gallardo has compiled a record of 15-5 with a 3.15 ERA (49 ER, 140.0 IP) with 118 strikeouts and 44 walks.
  • Of his 22 career starts against Houston, 12 have been quality starts.
  • In his first two career starts against Houston (Sept. 5, 2007 vs. HOU w/MIL and Sept. 17, 2007 at HOU) Gallardo went 2-0 and did not allow a run in 15 innings, striking out 10 while walking five.
  • The Mariners rank tied for fourth in the Majors in doubles with 17 (with the Dodgers), trailing Arizona (20), San Francisco (20) and Washington (20). Seattle is one of three MLB teams – and the only American League squad – with three players with at least three doubles each (Robinson Canó: 3, Mitch Haniger: 3 and Taylor Motter: 3).
