Area roundup: Washington State baseball falls to Utah in extra innings

From staff and wire reports

Dillon Plew tied the game for Washington State with a single in the ninth inning but a misplayed fly ball in the bottom of the 10th cost the Cougars in a 2-1 loss to Utah in Pac-12 play in Salt Lake City on Thursday.

The first two Utah batters in the 10th reached via walk, but the Cougs picked up a pair of outs on a fielder’s choice and a flyout. Utah’s Zack Moeller then lifted a fly ball to left that Justin Harrer misplayed and Dallas Carroll carried the winning run home from second.

Ryan Walker (3-5) was the hard-luck loser. He didn’t allow a hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Starter Damon Jones allowed one run on four hits and two walks over five innings with four strikeouts.

Utah starter Jayson Rose struck out seven over seven shutout innings. He allowed six hits and four walks. Jacob Rebar earned the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

CC Spokane 10-6, Wenatchee Valley 1-5: Kade Woods pitched a complete game in the first of a doubleheader sweep for the Sasquatch (17-14, 10-8) over the visiting Knights (3-25, 3-15).

Woods allowed one unearned run on seven hits and no walks with eight strikeouts. He threw 74 of his 104 pitches for strikes. Isaac Wersland went 2 for 4 with his eighth homer of the season and drove in three. Mitchell Cox went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBIs. Spokane stole four bases in the early game.

The Sasquatch jumped out for five runs in the first and three more in the second. Cox plated two with a single in the first inning and Wersland went deep on a 1-1 pitch in the second.

In the second game, CCS withstood a late rally to escape with a close win. The Knights scored three in the ninth, including a two-run home run by Dalton Harum off Cory Wagner, but Wagner then coaxed a groundout to third to earn the save.

CCS starter Ryan Bird went 8 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits and no walks with nine strikeouts.

Spokane put up five runs in the sixth, with Aaron Fritts delivering the big blow – a three-run homer, his third of the season. Fritts finished 2 for 4 with two runs.

Women’s golf

Two local golfers were chosen to compete in the NCAA Division I Women’s Regionals golf tournaments May 8-10.

Gonzaga’s Bianca Pagdanganan is making her second-straight regional appearance as an individual and his headed to the Albuquerque Regional at the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is the second-seeded individual at the site.

Pagdanganan, a two-time All-WCC selection, was named the WCC Golfer of the Month for the month of March and recently finished 11th at the WCC Championships last week. She shot a tournament, course, school, and West Coast Conference record 61 in her second round at the Pizza Hut Thunderbird Invitational in March, tying the NCAA women’s golf single-round record.

For the second time in three years, Alivia Brown of Washington State has been selected to compete as an individual at regionals. Brown will play in the Lubbock Regional at the Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas.

Brown is just the fourth Cougar to be selected as an individual and the first to be selected more than once. She is the only Cougar to appear in an NCAA Regional since 2007.
