Pedestrian killed in car crash near Eloika Lake

A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a pickup truck 2 miles south of the Spokane-Pend Oreille county line Saturday night.

Mathew Thayer, 26, of Elk, was standing in the southbound lane of state Route 2 at 9:41 p.m. when he was struck by a truck traveling toward Eloika Lake, according to a memo released by the Washington State Patrol.

The truck was operated by Patrick Wellman, 32, of Spokane.

The WSP said the cause of accident was a pedestrian violation and drugs or alcohol were involved.

Thayer was declared dead at the scene. Wellman was not injured.

The road was blocked briefly but has since reopened.
