Washington State’s Derek Bayley in second place at Washington State Men’s Amateur
CLE ELUM, Wash. – Washington State University senior Derek Bayley dropped into second place at the Washington State Men’s Amateur after a second-round 71 Wednesday at Tumble Creek.
Joe Highsmith of Bellarmine Prep, who won the State 4A title at Liberty Lake in May, fired a 6-under-par 65 to move into first place. He’s at 8-under 135 through 36 holes entering Thursday’s final round.
Bayley reached 8 under after making five straight birdies from Nos. 9-13, but he slipped back with a bogey on 14 and a double bogey on 16. The Lakeland High product trails Highsmith by three shots.
Hayden Lake’s Reid Hatley (72) is tied for ninth, eight strokes behind Highsmith.
