Daniel Roy wins 200-meter breaststroke at Junior Nationals in record time

Daniel Roy lived up to his billing on Friday in the 2017 Speedo Junior National swimming championships in East Meadow, New York.

The Gonzaga Prep senior, the top ranked junior male in the country in the 200-meter breaststroke, broke open a tight race in the final 50 meters, pulling away to win the event in a meet-record time of 2 minutes, 11.25 seconds.

Roy, 17, who swims for King Aquatic Club in Federal Way, Washington, had set the record of 2:11.92, turning in the fastest time in the prelims. The previous record, 2:12.17, was set in 2015.

It was the second “A” final victory of the week for Roy. On Tuesday he won the 100 breast in 1:01.42.

He also won the “C” final in the 400 individual medley on Wednesday in dramatic fashion, charging from dead last on the second leg, the backstroke, to capture 17th overall.

He ends his week in the 200 IM om Saturday.
