Empathy before oppression
Steve Massey’s August 12 column about transgender sexuality is simply wrong. It flies in the face of compelling biological, sociological and psychological evidence to the contrary. At bottom it is a moralistic proclamation out of the Dark Ages, the foundation of which is prejudice.
And it is a homophobic prejudice with the same intolerant social oppression of racism or mainstream sexual bias. As such it is inhumane, and a “moral” framework within which its victims suffer ruined lives. It is precisely the kind of attitude precipitates the suicide rates that Massey finds so appalling.
It is simplistic and empty-headed to assert that transgender people can deny their biological and psychological imperatives, any more than homosexuals can decide to be heterosexual, or blacks can decide to be white.
How about a little Christian empathy and tolerance instead of misguided and harmful moralistic oppression?
