Tisha Phillips scores 19 points and Eastern Washington women hold off Portland State

From staff reports

Tisha Phillips scored 19 points, Delaney Hodgins added 18 and Eastern Washington completed a two-game road sweep in Big Sky Conference action and defeated Portland State 68-62 on Saturday in Portland.

Phillips went 7 of 12 from the field, including a 4 of 5 performance from beyond the arc. Ashli Payne added 13 points for Eastern Washington (13-9, 8-3), hitting 9 of 10 from the line, with 14 rebounds and five assists.

Eastern maintained control much of the game, holding a lead for 37 minutes of action with only two lead changes.

Midway through the fourth quarter, however, the Eagles were in danger of losing that lead as Portland State (10-12, 4-6) trimmed its deficit to one.

With 7:14 remaining, an offensive rebound gave Violet Kapri Morrow an open jumper that ignited a 7-2 run. The Eagles kept grasp of the lead for the rest of the contest, and smothered the Vikings with late-game free throws.

“Anytime you can get a road sweep in the Big Sky it’s a good weekend,” said head coach Wendy Schuller. “Today wasn’t always pretty, but we stepped up and made sure to get stops when we needed to.”

The Eagles return home to face North Dakota on Thursday at 6:05 p.m.
