Tacoma alma mater to honor Boyington

A memorial to World War II hero Col. Gregory “Pappy” Boyington took a step forward this week, when Tacoma Public Schools officials settled on a location for it at Lincoln High School. Boyington, who died in 1988 at the age of 75, was a 1930 graduate of the school and gained wartime fame as a Marine Corps fighter pilot. He won the Navy Cross and the Medal of Honor — initially awarded by President Franklin Roosevelt while he was missing in action, then later presented to him in person by President Harry Truman after he was freed from a Japanese prison camp/ Tacoma News Tribune .
