Jewish support for ordinance

As leaders of the Jewish community in Spokane, we state our support for the City Council ordinance barring employees from participating in a registry of citizens based on faith. We are also distressed and angered by the federal ban on entry of individuals from Muslim countries.

America has always welcomed immigrants of all religions and races. Freedom of religion and protection for diversity are enshrined in the U.S. Constitution and in our fundamental laws.

In recent history, Jews have had the experience of being both refugees and immigrants. We are very aware of the deadly consequences of slamming the doors of the this country shut on people just because of who they are and from where they are come.

Our tradition teaches respect for all human beings. Hate and prejudice have no place in Spokane or anywhere in America. As brothers and sisters in our American family, we stand with the Muslim community to support your safety and your rights.
