The No. 1 Gonzaga Bulldogs defeated the No. 20 Saint Mary’s Gaels 74-64 on Saturday at the McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, California. Here are the three keys to the Zags’ win:
Gonzaga rattled off a 17-2 spurt late in the first half to take a 40-25 lead, answering a 9-0 burst by the Gaels that had evened the score at 23. Johnathan Williams scored six points and Przemek Karnowski five points as GU pulled away.
Offensive player of the game
Senior center Karnowski had 10 points in the first 3:35 and 15 in the first half as Gonzaga led by as many as 15. He finished with 19 points, making 9 of 13 attempts, and added one assist.
Defensive player of the game
Silas Melson is a regular in this space and he produced another strong defensive effort. He spent quite a bit of time on Joe Rahon, who made just 4 of 10 shots and finished with nine points.
