Area girls: Chiawana knocks out Gonzaga Prep in 4A subregional

Kenedy Cartwright scored 21 points and visiting Chiawana (19-6) defeated Gonzaga Prep (15-9) 62-57 on Saturday in the 4A subregional second-place game.

Chiawana advances to regionals next weekend while the Bullpups’ season closes.

Chiawana led 29-21 at intermission and pushed the lead to 12 by the end of the third quarter, led by Cartwright and Kenzie Cordray. Cordray finished with 17 points.

Gonzaga Prep cut into the deficit with a 14-7 fourth-quarter run, but couldn’t make up the difference. Olivia Mayer led G-Prep with 25 points and nine boards.

District 8 3A

Mt. Spokane 68, North Central 42: Aspyn Adams scored a career-high 33 points, hitting six 3-pointers, and the Wildcats (18-5) beat the visiting Indians (8-15) in the 3A subregional loser-out second-place game.

Mt. Spokane, which got out to a 20-10 lead after the first quarter and drained 15 3-pointers, advances to a glue crossover game on Tuesday. Jaidyn Lyman added 11 points for Mt. Spokane.

Elyce Piper led North Central with 14 points.

2A crossovers

East Valley 64, Selah 61: Genesis Wilkinson scored 25 points, hitting 9 of 11 from the line, and the Knights (15-6) beat the visiting Vikings (11-13) in a Great Northern League-Central Washington Athletic Conference glue crossover game.

East Valley advances to regionals next weekend.

Faith Adams scored a critical 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter that put East Valley ahead by four. Adams finished with seven points, while Brie Holecek added 13 points.

Selah was led by Adriel Willis with 25 points.

District 7 2B

St. George’s 49, Davenport 46: Hailey Higashi scored 15 points the Dragons (21-2) edged the Gorillas (19-4) in double overtime in the District 7 2B title game at West Valley.

Both teams advance to the regional tournament next weekend.

With one second remaining in regulation, Daysha Melendez snagged a rebound and threw up a critical shot to tie the game to send it into overtime.

The Dragons were able to squeeze out a lead over the Gorillas in the second overtime, thanks in part to a two-point field goal and a couple of free throws by Higashi.

Sidney Abbott’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer to tie it up for Davenport missed the mark. Abbott led Davenport with 15 points and Madison Abbott added 12.

Colfax 71, Liberty 60: Taylor Garcia scored 21 points, Carmen Gfeller added 15 and the Bulldogs (19-6) beat the Lancers (20-5) in the District 7 2B third-place game at West Valley HS.

Liberty led 14-4 after the first quarter but Colfax came roaring back with three consecutive 20-plus point quarters to advance to next week’s regional tournament. The Bulldogs will face Dayton, ranked No. 1 in state 2B in the final RPI ratings.

Maisie Burnham led Liberty with 24 points and Christine Denny finished her illustrious prep career with 11 points.

District 7 1B

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 51, Republic 38: Gabi Isaak scored 21 points and the Warriors (17-3) topped the Tigers (19-1) in the District 7 1B title game at Deer Park HS.

Not only do both teams advance to next weekend’s regionals, they will face each other in the first round.

The Warriors were down by 12 at the end of the first half but outscored Republic 35-10 in the second half. Berlyn Hunt scored 16 points for ACH, while Mikayla Rushton grabbed 14 rebounds.

Shania Graham led Republic with 15 points.

Selkirk 44, Curlew 29: Jenna Couch scored 13 points and the Rangers (20-4) advanced to regionals with a victory over Curlew (12-11) in the District 7 1B third-place game.

Selkirk led 19-4 after the first quarter and 26-6 at intermission. Gabi Rick added 10 points for the Rangers.

Korin Baker led Curlew with 14 points.

District 9 2B

Oakesdale 52, Pomeroy 47: Jacey Johnson scored 18 points with 10 rebounds and the Nighthawks (20-5) beat the Pirates (16-8) in the District 9 1B second-place game at Colfax HS.

Logan Reed added nine points with 10 rebounds for Oakesdale, which advances to regionals as the No. 2 seed.

Kacey Halbert scored 15 points to lead Pomeroy.
