Early morning RV fire sends one man to hospital for minor injuries

An early morning RV fire near downtown Spokane sent one man to the hospital early Friday morning.

Firefighters responded to the blaze shortly after 4 a.m. The RV was parked on the corner of Cowley Street and Short Avenue. Spokane Acting Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer said flames could be seen from Fire Station 1, in downtown.

The fire started because a candle was too close to combustibles, Schaeffer said. The heat from the blaze was so intense that it broke windows at the nearby Buder Haven Apartments.

“There is a lot of damage to the building just from the proximity,” Schaeffer said.

The man, who was living in the RV, escaped on his own. He was transported to the hospital with minor burns and smoke inhalation. He’s expected to make a full recovery, Schaeffer said.
