1. Spokane Symphony Classics 5: American Voices
Celebrating America’s vibrant musical voice. Scott Joplin infuses German opera with ragtime, Duke Ellington entwines complex melodies and rhythms to create a musical tour of Harlem, and George Gershwin uses rich blues to evoke the impressions of “An American in Paris.” Samuel Barber’s rhythmic vitality captures the spirit of a literary farce, while John Adams’ “foxtrot for orchestra” portrays Chairman Mao dancing with his mistress. Sergei Prokofiev’s lyrical violin concerto rounds out the program. Eckart Preu, conductor.

2. Comedian Howie Mandel
He’s been a doctor on TV (“St. Elsewhere”), a game show host (“Deal or No Deal”) and a talent show judge (“America’s Got Talent”). Primarily, however, Howie Mandel has been a stand-up comedian, recording albums and specials over a 30-year career. He brings his funny bone to the West Plains this weekend.

5. Friends of ‘The Guitar Hour’ Concert Series: Martha Masters
Classical guitarist Martha Masters is an acclaimed performer who has been a solo recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist in concert halls around the world. She kicks off the second Friends of “The Guitar Hour” Concert Series, presented by Leon Atkinson, with a concert on Thursday. Upcoming concerts in the series include the South Hill Guitar Duo on Feb. 17, John Goulart on March 24 and Mak Grgic on May 12.
