Derek Berg shot an 8-under-par 63 Friday at Indian Canyon Golf Course to take the first-round lead of the 30th annual Rosauers Open Invitational.

Berg, an assistant pro at Sahalee in Sammamish, Washington, had eight birdies and no bogeys. Lewiston amateur Jason Molner (65) is in second place.

There is a logjam of nine players at 66, including four-time champion Corey Prugh and his father Steve, 2012 champion David Phay, 2005 champion Ryan Benzel and North Idaho College coach Russell Grove.

  • Defending Rosauers champion Derek Bayley isn’t in the field because he’s on a roll at the 116th annual Pacific Northwest Golf Association Amateur. Bayley, a senior at Washington State University, won two matches at Emerald Valley Golf and Resort in Creswell, Oregon. He defeated University of Oregon junior Edwin Yi 2-up in the quarterfinals and Texas A&M’s Josh Gliege 2 and 1 in the semifinals. Bayley will face Emmett Oh, who recently concluded his career at the University of Houston, in Saturday’s 36-hole final. Oh edged WSU’s Brian Mogg 1-up in the semis. Mogg defeated No. 1 seed Sam Foust, an Oregon junior, 2 and 1 in the quarterfinals.
