Fire Chief Lonnie Rash of Spokane County Fire District No. 4 said there is an answer to a rash of wrecks in his sprawling district this summer: Drive more safely.

In two weeks, firefighters in the north county district have responded to 17 accidents – more than one a day, Rash said.

“Nothing can ruin your day like a car wreck, even if it includes minimal damage,” Rash said in a news release.

Here are his tips for safety:

Buckle up.

Maintain a safe speed and do not tailgate.

Drive defensively. Keep an eye on the mirrors.

Approach all intersections with caution. Watch for vehicles entering or crossing highways.

Move over if possible or slow down when coming upon emergency vehicles. That is the law.

“The responders on scene need to have a safe place to work,” Rash said in the news release.

“Cars that pass an accident scene at highway speed put everyone in danger,” he said.

“Last, always obey all traffic laws – they exist to keep you safe. Don’t take chances with your life or others’ lives on the highway.”
