Fresno 12, Tacoma (AAA) 9
FRESNO, Calif. – Juan Centeno hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning, leading the Fresno Grizzlies (24-30) to a 12-9 win over the Tacoma Rainiers (31-21) on Thursday.
The home run by Centeno gave the Grizzlies a 10-7 lead and capped a six-run inning for Fresno. Earlier in the inning, Fresno tied the game when A.J. Reed hit a two-run single.
Following the big inning, the Rainiers cut into the deficit in the top of the next frame when Eugene Helder hit an RBI triple and then scored on a ground out by Leonys Martin.
The Grizzlies added to their lead in the sixth when Derek Fisher hit a two-run home run.
Brian Holmes (1-2) got the win in relief while Tacoma starter Rob Whalen (0-3) took the loss in the Pacific Coast League game. Dayan Diaz pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for his first save of the season.
Martin homered and singled, scoring a couple of runs while also driving home two for the Rainiers.
Arkansas (AA) 7, Midland 6
MIDLAND, Texas – Chuck Taylor and Dario Pizzano connected on back-to-back homers in the first inning to help lead the Arkansas Travelers (24-28) to a 7-6 victory over Midland RockHounds (27-26) on Thursday.
Peter Tago allowed two runs, but got B.J. Boyd to fly out with runners on first and third to end the game for his fourth save of the season.
The home runs were both solo shots and gave the Travelers a 2-0 lead.
The Travelers later added a run in the fourth and four in the seventh. In the fourth, Jeff Kobernus hit an RBI double, while Kyle Petty drove in three runs and Kobernus drove in one in the seventh.
Midland saw its comeback attempt come up short after Jermaine Curtis scored on a forceout and Yairo Munoz hit an RBI single in the ninth to cut the Arkansas lead to 7-6.
Kobernus doubled and singled twice, driving in two runs in the win.
Starter Justin DeFratus (1-0) got the win while Brandon Mann (2-4) took the loss in relief in the Texas League game.
Munoz homered and singled, driving home three runs for the RockHounds.
Inland Empire 2, Modesto (High-A) 1
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Cody Ramer hit a walk-off triple with one out in the ninth inning, as the Inland Empire 66ers (26-28) beat the Modesto Nuts (31-23) 2-1 on Thursday.
Jose Rojas scored the game-winning run after he reached base with a single.
The Nuts tied the game 1-1 in the top of the eighth when Arturo Nieto hit a solo home run.
Inland Empire starter Luis Pena went seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out six and walking four. Samil De Los Santos (1-0) got the win in relief while Bryan Bonnell (1-2) took the loss in the California League game.
For the Nuts, Chris Mariscal tripled and doubled.
Beloit 9, Clinton (Low-A) 1
BELOIT, Wis. – Collin Theroux hit two home runs as the Beloit Snappers (27-26) topped the Clinton LumberKings (21-30) 9-1 on Thursday.
Beloit started the scoring in the first inning when Nate Mondou hit an RBI single to score Luis Barrera.
The LumberKings tied the game in the third inning when Luis Liberato scored on a ground out.
Beloit later scored in three additional innings, including a four-run eighth, when Theroux hit a two-run home run to help punctuate the blowout.
Beloit right-hander Brendan Butler (2-3) picked up a quality start and the win after allowing one run on five hits over six innings. Opposing starter Ljay Newsome (4-5) took the loss in the Midwest League game after giving up four runs and six hits over five innings. Xavier Altamirano pitched three scoreless innings for his first save of the season.
