Education notebook: Northwest Christian Schools students create special pillows for Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital patients

High school students at Northwest Christian Schools created a special gift for patients at Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital.

Lisa Greer, the schools’ home living instructor, and her students delivered “PICC Pal” pillows for young patients at the children’s hospital. According to the district website, “the pillows are meant to go between the child’s skin and their PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter line). The PICC is placed in their forearm to provide chemotherapy or other long-term treatments.”

Students formed 210 of these pillows as different objects and animals.

The following students participated: Kyle Berreth, Luke Morasch, Charles Williamson, Carson Bowman, Elijah Cox, Logan Dueweke, Gunnar Kuehl, Brian Mackenzie, Jake Cheng, Mason Maystrovich, Neil Chen, Katie McAdam, Courtney Weiss, Allison Betts, Gloria Gao, Natalie Smith, Mary Savage, Grace Ammon, Paige Dawson, Christian Stroupe, Jack Muncey, Issac Ramsey and Abby Peterson.

Holy Names Music Center names scholarship recipients

Spokane community music school Holy Names Music Center recently awarded approximately $15,000 in need and talent-based grants at their annual talent show.

The recipients and their music instructors are : Nicole Hindman, 14, violin, and Noah Eddy, 11, violin, both students of Garnik Goukasian; Isabelle Calderon-Lin, 16, violin, student of Claire Keeble; Megumi Call, 17, piano, student of Linda Siverts; and John Malsam, 10, piano, student of Sr. Kay Heberling, SNJM.

Fourth-grader’s invention wins best of show

In the recent 2017 Invent Washington State Competition in Spokane, fourth-grader Blake Oeck won Best of Show for first through fourth grades after inventing the Germinator which is designed to automatically kills germs in toilets and prevent the spread of disease.

In April, Oeck participated in the Wenatchee School District Invention Fair, winning first place in the fourth grade Adaptations Division and Best of Show for the Wenatchee School District. After winning Best of Show in the state at the 2017 Invent Washington State Competition, Oeck received an invitation to represent Washington State at the 2017 National Invention Convention and Entrepreneurship Expo in Washington, D.C.

Medical Lake sixth-grade team takes first place at Math Is Cool

Students from Hallett Elementary, Michael Anderson Elementary and Medical Lake Middle School recently competed in the Math Is Cool competition in Moses Lake.

The following students from Medical Lake Middle School sixth grade group took first place: Kaleb Cain, Riley Chiamulon, Atlas Martin-Labrucherie and Reid Headrick.

Students representing Hallett: Lindsay Kuster, Kaden Rudy, Sheehan Connors and Nolan Matheny. Students from Michael Anderson: Kailey Grant, Martin Clapper, Samuel Gleason and Shawn Scott.
