The Seattle Mariners on Wednesday announced the club has signed shortstop Jean Segura to a five-year contract extension, covering the 2018-2022 seasons, with a club option for 2023.

Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but several outlets report the deal is believed to be five years, $70 million, with a $17 million club option for ’23.

“Over the past two seasons, Jean has been one of the premier offensive players in baseball,” Mariners general manager Dipoto said in a press release. “His combination of average, power and speed is extremely difficult to find, especially as a top-of-the-lineup hitter at a key defensive position like shortstop. We are all quite excited about having him here with the Mariners and believe he is a key ingredient in our ongoing effort to build a championship level roster.”

Segura, 27, is currently on the disabled list because of a high right ankle sprain suffered June 1. Despite the injury, he still leads the American League’s with a .341 average. Segura has four home runs and 20 RBIs with seven steals. Last season for Arizona, Segura led the N.L. in hits with 203, and set personal season highs in average, hits, runs, homers, RBIs an stolen bases.

The Mariners acquired Segura along with outfielder Mitch Haniger and reliever Zac Curtis from the Arizona Diamondbacks in November 2016, in exchange for pitcher Taijuan Walker and infielder Ketel Marte.
