Area roundup: CC Spokane men fall to Big Bend, settle for second in region
Jacob McCord scored 24 points with 16 rebounds and Big Bend (19-10, 11-5) beat CC Spokane (23-6, 12-4) 99-86 on Saturday in the Northwest Athletic Conference regular season finale.
CCS finishes the season in second place in the East Region, one game behind North Idaho (23-6, 12-4) and one ahead of Walla Walla (20-8, 11-5) and Big Bend.
Jai Jai Ely scored 20 points for the Runnin’ Vikes. Joey Andrews added 19 points while Josh Erickson had 17 points and hit 4 of 9 from long distance.
Spokane was led by Orin Porter with 22 points. Levi Taylor had 19 points with five assists and Ryan Alexander added 10.
Women’s basketball
CC Spokane 87, Big Bend 73: Bri King scored 24 points with four steals and five assists and the Sasquatch (23-4, 14-2) topped the visiting Vikings (12-17, 4-12) in the NWAC regular season finale at SCC.
CCS finished atop the East Region with Walla Walla, but the Warriors won the region via tiebreaker.
King went 9 of 20 from the field and 3 of 9 from beyond the arc. Cali Moscrip scored 18 points with eight assists, Imani Guillory had 16 points, Janessa Heine added 15 points with seven rebounds and Katlyn Ward had 12 points and seven boards.
Sunnie Martinez scored 23 points to lead Big Bend with 23 points. Hailey Garrity and Callie Gronning added 13 points apiece and Madison Wilcox added 11. Garrity grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Spokane rushed out to a 28-16 first-quarter lead and pulled away with a pair of 20-plus point quarters after halftime.
Baseball
Denis Karas doubled home Andrew Vaughn from first in the bottom of the 13th inning to lift California over Gonzaga 8-7 in the first game of a scheduled nonconference doubleheader on Saturday in Berkeley, California.
In the second game, rain forced postponement with Cal leading 3-2 at the end of the sixth. Play will resume on Sunday at 11:35 a.m. before the series finale at 1:05 p.m.
Jake Vieth went 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs, Sam Brown went 2 for 5 with a pair driven in and Jeff Bohling had three hits and an RBI. Starter Mac Lardner allowed five earned runs on eight hits and a walk over 5 1/3 innings.
Gonzaga’s Calvin LeBrun (0-1) took the loss in his second inning of work.
Willamette 7-9, Whitworth 1-8: Matt Steindorf (5-0) allowed one run on four hits and two walks, striking out six, and the Bearcats (9-5, 5-2) beat the Pirates (6-4, 0-3) in the first of a pair of Northwest Conference games in Parkland, Washington.
Kyle Paguio and Mason Fessler drove in three runs apiece for Willamette, which pounded out 14 hits and drew four walks against three Pirate hurlers.
Whitworth starter Hugh Smith was roughed up for six earned runs on seven hits and three walks over 2 2/3 innings.
In the second game, Whitworth ran up an 8-1 lead after two innings then coughed up the lead in the last two, as the Bearcats scored six in the eighth and two more in the ninth.
Starter Ryan Kingma (L, 2-1) went seven innings and allowed five runs – four earned – on six hits and five walks, striking out two. Spencer Locati drove in two while Joel Condray and Ryan Bird had a pair of hits apiece.
Softball
North Idaho split a pair of nonconference games at Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. In the first game, Kennedy Anderson homered and Kayla Curtan went 3 for 4 with an RBI in a 5-4 loss to Muskegon.
In the second game, the Cardinals scored six in the sixth and escaped with a 10-4 win over Mercyhurst Northeast. Ana Raynor and Kalyna Korok hit home runs and Korok drove in four.
Track and Field
Jacob Sturtevant won men’s 100m and 200m, while Kayla Brase took women’s long jump and triple jump at the Ed Boitano Invitational in Tacoma.
Whitworth men’s team placed first of seven teams.
Sarah Cool and Kameha Medallada finished 1-2 in women’s 100m, Kayla Leland won women’s 800m and Allison Wood won women’s 10,000 meter.
Jalen Robinson-McClure won men’s 400m, Daniel Harper took men’s 800m, Lucas McGill won men’s high jump and Andrew Bloom and Zachary Fairhart finsihed 1-2 in men’s javelin.
Janke Leads Team USA to NACAC XC Championships U20 Title
Washington State freshman Justin Janke’s fourth-place finish led the USA U20 Men’s team to the team gold medal at the 13th Annual North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships in Boca Raton, Florida.
Janke, ran the South Country Regional Park 6,500 meters course in a time of 19 minutes 22.36 seconds.
The USA U20 men’s team won with a total of 25 points followed by Mexico with 31, Canada with 42, and Puerto Rico with 49.
