Food Editor’s Picks: Where to find favorite cake, cookie

Cake – The signature Soon-to-Be Famous Coconut Cream Layer Cake at Wild Sage American Bistro in downtown Spokane has been a favorite since I tried it nearly four years ago. The Genoise layers interspersed with mascarpone-coconut cream filling and plated with lilikoi sauce sells for $8.50 a slice. But it’s a generous slice, sprinkled with toasted coconut. And, this time of year, while we’re dreaming of spring but it’s still threatening to snow, the carbs and cream – cut with tangy passion fruit – are particularly comforting, reminiscent of the tropics and conjuring memories of palm trees and warm, sunny beaches. http://www.wildsagebistro.com/

Cookies – The French macarons at Common Crumb Artisan Bakery are crispy, cream-filled and cute as a button. They’re also a perennial favorite. It really doesn’t matter which flavor. At $2.50 each, I usually leave with at least two. Sometimes, four. commoncrumb.com.
