Area roundup: Gonzaga win again in California, beats up on UC Riverside

Jeff Bohling went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two doubles and visiting Gonzaga topped UC Riverside 10-3 on Tuesday in nonconference play in Riverside, California.

Tyler Frost clubbed a three-run homer and Justin Jacobs went 2 for 5 with a solo home run for the Zags (7-9). Jake Roberts went 3 for 3 and scored twice.

Gonzaga starter Daniel Bies (W, 1-1) went five innings and allowed three runs on five hits and four walks, striking out five.

UC Riverside fell to 10-6.

Jacobs and Jake Vieth had RBI singles in the first, and Gonzaga went up 3-0 in the second on Bohling’s run-scoring double.

UCR trimmed its deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the second, but the Zags exploded for four in the fourth, including Frost’s 3-run bomb, his fourth this season.

Gonzaga scratched out two more in the fifth on a fielder’s choice and a sacrifice, then Jacobs put the exclamation point on the win with his second homer of the season in the sixth.

Men’s golf

Washington State finished 17-over par and Gonzaga was 43-over to place 11th and 15th in a 16-team field at the Bandon Dunes Championship hosted by Gonzaga at Old MacDonald Course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Oregon.

The Cougars tied its first round score (2-over 290) in the third and final round on Tuesday, while the Bulldogs shot 19-over par for the day.

No. 14 Oregon shot 12-under par (276) in the third round for a three-round total of 28-under par (836) to take the team honors.

Texas Tech’s Hannes Ronneblad led after each round to capture the individual title with a total score of 10-under par (206).

WSU’s Derek Bayley shot even-par (72) in the third round to finish tied for 31st with a three-round score of 4-over par (220).

Ryan Gaske was low golfer for Gonzaga at 5-under par 221, tied for 36th.

Women’s golf

Gonzaga’s Bianca Pagdanganan shot 2-over 74 in the final round to finish 6-over and place 12th at the BYU at Entrada Classic at Entrada at Snow Canyon in Saint George, Utah.

The Zags were 19-over par on the final day and moved up a spot on the leaderboard to finish seventh.

Ciera Min finished tied for 23rd with a final day 76 and Jessica Mangrobang shot an 81 to finish tied for 31st.

Kent State ran away with first place, downing second-place BYU by 13 strokes and shooting 2-over for the tourney. Karoline Stormo (-4) won the individual title by four strokes.

Basketball

Whitworth point guard Kenny Love has been selected to participate in the 2017 Reese’s Division III College All-Star Game on Saturday in Salem, Virginia, and has been named First Team All-West Region, both by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

Love is the first Whitworth player since Michael Taylor in 2010 to play in the Reese’s Division III College All-Star Game. He is one of ten players on the West roster.

Love is one of six players named to the NABC All-West Region first team. He was also an NABC First Team West Region honoree in 2014.

Love has already been named First Team All-Northwest Conference and Second Team All-West Region by D3hoops.com this year. He is one of only 14 players in the history of the NWC, along with teammate Christian Jurlina, to earn All-NWC First Team recognition for three or four years.

Love led the Northwest Conference in assists (122) this season and tied for first in assists per game (4.4). He averaged 12.0 points and 5.1 rebounds and he finished his career 15th on Whitworth’s all-time scoring list with 1,243 points.
