Protect Riverfront Park

It is distressing to read that City Council President Ben Stuckart and “downtown business boosters” want to do away with the city planning codes that were designed to protect Riverfront Park from becoming overshadowed by a tunnel of imposing buildings. Our community has no greater treasure than the Spokane River and Riverfront Park. We should do everything possible to maintain this unique asset that is the very heart of Spokane.

Mark Richard, president of the Downtown Spokane Partnership thinks, it’s a “reasonable tradeoff” that long shadows will predominate the park except perhaps during summer. “If you’re buying dirt next to the park, to make it pencil out, you’ve got to have a perfect amount of space,” Richard says.

Is it asking too much that developers who build on this “dirt” have to allow for some setback on their buildings after the first 100 feet of height? I don’t think so.
