Area roundup: Gonzaga’s Bianca Pagdanganan in contention for national berth

Gonzaga’s Bianca Pagdanganan made eagles to cap both the front nine and back nine on Tuesday to shoot a 3-under 69 in the second round of the NCAA Regional Championship at the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.

Pagdanganan was one-under on the front with birdies on No. 1 and No. 7, with the eagle on nine. She only had one bogey on the back with a birdie on 16 and an eagle on 18 to go two-under on the back nine and finish in a tie for fourth place, two strokes off the lead and a 10-spot improvement from Monday.

The third and final round is Wednesday starting at 7:15 a.m.

Brown eying nationals: Washington State’s Alivia Brown kept the qualifying line within sight after carding a 1-over 73 for the second round of the NCAA Regionals in Lubbock, Texas.

With 36 holes in the book, Brown sits tied for 28th overall at five-over par after posting a 76 and 73 for her first two rounds of play.

Whitworth wins 10th straight NWC ‘all sports’ trophy: The Northwest Conference announced the final standings for the 2016-17 McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports Trophy and Whitworth has won the award for the tenth year in a row.

The first McIlroy-Lewis Trophy was awarded in 1986.

Whitworth finished 2016-17 with 251 points in the standings, beating runner-up Pacific Lutheran (226) by 25 points. Linfield (218) finished in third place.

The Pirates claimed NWC titles in four sports in 2016-17: women’s cross country, men’s soccer, volleyball and softball. Whitworth was runner-up in football, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s track & field. The Bucs got third place finishes from women’s soccer and men’s swimming.

Points are awarded per sport, based on final standings.
