Recipe for sugar cookies from Dorothy Dean’s files

Get out your cookie cutters. This vintage recipe will give them a work out.

A recent caller was looking for a sugar cookie recipe from Dorothy Dean to make treats in a variety of spring shapes, such as tulips and daisies.

This is what a dig through the Dorothy Dean archives turned up. The recipe appeared in The Spokesman-Review in 1959.

Crisp Cut-out Cookies

1/2 cup soft butter or margarine

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

2 tablespoons cream

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 1/2 cups sifted flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon soda

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

Cream butter or margarine and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Stir in cream and vanilla.

Sift dry ingredients; stir in. Dough may be tinted with food coloring, if desired.

Chill dough 4 to 5 hours or overnight.

Roll out dough a little at a time, keeping the rest chilled, to 1/8-inch thickness on well-floured board. Cut in shapes as desired.

Bake at 400 degrees on ungreased cookie sheet for 6 to 8 minutes, until delicately browned.

Let stand a minute before removing from baking sheet. Decorate with powdered sugar icing or colored sugar, if desired.

Yield: 8 dozen, depending on size.

Downtown Indaba location adds alcohol

The downtown location of Indaba Coffee now serves alcohol.

Service started Friday. The menu is limited; one winery, one brewery and one cidery will be featured at a time. To start, the coffee shop is featuring selections from Barrister Winery, No-Li Brewery and One Tree Hard Cidery, all of Spokane.

“We will have wine by the glass, beer by the can and cider by the glass,” said owner Bobby Enslow. “Our goal ultimately is for (customers) to buy a bottle to take with them. Tasting flights and events are also in the works.”

His current fave: Barrister’s Sauvingon Blanc. “I’m so ready for summer!” he said.

Both locations – downtown and West Central – are also expanding their hours. New hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Indaba is at 201 N. Howard St. in downtown and 1425 W. Broadway Ave. in West Central. Call downtown at (509) 492-2067. Call Broadway at (509) 443-3566.
