Area roundup: Taylor Van Zee homers and No. 8 Huskies softball pounds Utah

Taylor Van Zee went 3 for 4 with a two-run home run and three RBIs and No. 8 Washington (41-11, 14-8) routed Utah (33-12, 13-7) 12-1 in five innings in the first of a three-game Pac-12 series on Thursday in Salt Lake City.

Kirstyn Thomas hit a solo home run, Kelly Burdick went 3 for 3 with two runs while Morganne Flores went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and three RBIs.

Taran Alvelo (W, 26-6) gave up one unearned run on four hits and no walks over five innings.

Track and Field

Eastern Washington’s Kendra Hamm placed seventh of 16 finishers in the heptathlon with a personal- and program-best 4,857 points at the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, California.

Hamm finished first in 200-meter dash, seventh in 800-meter run and fourth in long jump. Teammate Dominique Butler set a personal best and finished 15th. Butler placed first in shot put, sixth in high jump and ninth in long jump.

Idaho’s Drew Thompson placed 14th of 16 men’s finishers.
