Teen who tried to shoot sheriff’s deputy sentenced to 13 years in prison

A teenager who reportedly told deputies the only reason he didn’t shoot one of them is because he forgot to take the safety off his gun has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Colton B. Singleton, 17, was originally charged as an adult with attempted murder. He was sentenced to 160 months in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to first-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy responded to a vehicle prowling in the 15800 block of East Valleyway Avenue the morning of March 27 and found Singleton an another man in the area. The deputy said Singleton pulled out a “pistol grip” style shotgun and tried to shoot him before he tripped and fell, according to court documents.

Singleton told deputies that he forgot to take the safety off. He also called the deputies “pigs,” court documents state.

He had previous convictions for second-degree robbery and felony possession of a controlled substance before his most recent arrest.
