Area roundup: Idaho sets up crucial volleyball match by sweeping Northern Colorado

Sarah Sharp accounted for 18 kills on Thursday and host Idaho set up a big match for first place by sweeping Northern Colorado 25-16, 25-13, 25-20 in Big Sky Conference volleyball in Moscow.

Idaho (14-10, 9-4) will host North Division-leading North Dakota (25-6, 10-3 Big Sky) on Saturday. The regular season ends next weekend.

Reece Carman added 10 kills and Haylee Mathis had 42 assists for the Vandals, who were swept at North Dakota on Sept. 28 before winning five consecutive matches.

Emily O’Neil had nine kills for the Bears (13-13, 6-7), the third-place team in the North.

  • Jordan Vail, Tamara Merseli and Faith Dooley combined for 34 kills to lead visiting North Dakota to a 25-13, 25-16, 25-12 sweep at Eastern Washington (6-16, 3-10). Vail and Dooley also teamed for seven blocks for the Fighting Hawks. Ashley Seiler had 12 kills for EWU, which has dropped eight consecutive matches. The Eagles’ Regan Harr added 17 assists and 14 digs for her 20th career double-double.
  • Adora Anae totaled a match-high 15 kills, and Bailey Choy added match bests of 29 assists and 15 while leading 15th-ranked Utah (18-6, 9-4 Pac-12 Conference) to a 25-18, 25-11, 25-18 win over Washington State (14-12, 3-11) in Salt Lake City. Taylor Mims had seven kills and 10 digs for the Cougars, who played their fourth match in seven days. The Cougars have been swept in three consecutive matches.
  • Megan Rice finished with a match-high 15 kills and Meredith Teague had five aces to guide Loyola Marymount (13-11, 6-7 West Coast Conference) to a 25-12, 25-12, 25-16 sweep of Gonzaga (13-11, 8-4) in Los Angeles. Alyse Whitaker had seven kills for the Bulldogs, who swept LMU on Oct. 7. Gonzaga remains in third place in the conference, behind BYU and San Diego, both 11-1.

Wrestling

Dorian Sapien (125 pounds) and Adrian Lyons-Lopez (174) registered pins while leading the University of Providence to a 29-9 victory over North Idaho in Great Falls.

Austin Iorga (133), Thomas Stevenson (157) and Levi Perry (184) notched decisions for the Cardinals.

College golf

Idaho juniors Enrique Marin and Sophie Hausmann were named Big Sky Conference golfers of the week.

Marin matched his career best with a 4-under-par 212 to tie for 32nd place at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, which ended Tuesday in Princeville, Hawaii.

Hausmann placed second at the UC Irvine Invitational at Santa Ana (California) Country Club, which ended Tuesday. Hausmann totaled 14 birdies in three round on the way to a 6-under 210.
