Area roundup: Gonzaga men’s soccer edged by Portland

Rey Ortiz scored in the 35th minute and Portland (9-6-1, 4-1-1) shut out Gonzaga (6-8-2, 0-5-1) 1-0 in a West Coast Conference matchup on Saturday in Portland.

Portland’s Paul Christensen made one save for the clean sheet. Ben Willis made two saves for the Zags.

Whitman 2, Whitworth 1: C.J. Fritz scored in the 106th minute and visiting Whitman (9-7-3, 8-3-3) edged Whitworth (10-8-1, 8-5-1) 2-1 in double-overtime in the Northwest Conference finale for both teams.

The Pirates’ Jonah Snyder tied the game at 1-1 in the 62nd minute with his ninth goal of his senior campaign.

CC Spokane 2, Tacoma 1: Ian Schimandle scored the golden goal in the 92nd minute to lift the Sasquatch over Tacoma in overtime at SFCC in a Northwest Athletic Conference quarterfinal match.

Spokane advances to the semifinals against Whatcom in Tukwila, Washington, on Friday.

Jesus Meraz-Rodriguez scored in the 35th minute for the Sasquatch.

Women’s soccer

Loyola Marymount 2, Gonzaga 1: Melissa Lewis’ header in the 35th minute proved to be the difference and LMU (9-6-4, 4-4-1) beat the Bulldogs (10-8-1, 2-7-0) 2-1 in WCC play in Los Angeles.

Callie Best drew the Zags within one in the 58th minute with her sixth of the season but Gonzaga couldn’t find the equalizer.

Linfield at Whitworth: Michele Whan scored twice and the Pirates (12-6-2, 11-3-2) topped visiting Linfield (8-9-2, 6-7-2) 3-2 in the NWC regular season finale for both teams.

Whan scored her fifth and sixth of the season, while Kelly Wucherer added her third. Sienna Tanner made four saves for the Pirates.

Highline 3, CC Spokane 0: Jewel Boland scored in the 67th minute and Highline eliminated the Sasquatch 3-0 in an NWAC quarterfinal in Tukwila, Washington.

McKenzie Buell and Jenna Jensen added late goals. Highline advances against Clark on Friday in a semifinal clash.

Volleyball

Washington 3, Utah 1: Courtney Schwan had 17 kills with 14 digs and the Huskies (19-6, 9-5) took care of the Utes (18-7, 9-5) in four sets (25-23, 20-25, 28-26, 25-22) in Pac-12 play in Salt Lake City.

Bailey Tanner had 30 assists and Tia Scambray added 19 digs with a pair of aces for the Huskies.

Pepperdine 3, Gonzaga 1: Hannah Frohling had 15 kills and Pepperdine (15-12, 7-7) topped the visiting Bulldogs (13-12, 8-5) in four sets (19-25, 25-12, 25-22, 25-15) in a WCC match in Malibu, California.

Jenna Kuehn, who leads the Zags with 13 double-doubles, had 13 assists and 11 digs. Sarah Penner and Chapin Gray led Gonzaga with 10 kills apiece.

Idaho 3, North Dakota 2: Sarah Sharp had 24 kills, Haylee Mathis added 58 assists with 19 digs and the Vandals (15-10, 10-4) edged North Dakota (25-7, 10-4) in five sets (25-20, 25-16, 21-25, 27-29, 15-13) in Big Sky action. Idaho tied North Dakota atop the Big Sky North standings.

Linfield 3, Whitworth 1: Darian Stedman had 11 kills with 25 digs and Linfield (11-12, 5-11) knocked off the visiting Pirates (15-10, 12-4) in four sets (25-23, 21-25, 25-13, 27-25) in the NWC finale for both teams in McMinnville, Oregon.

Lauren Budde had 13 kills and Gracie Meiners added 41 assists for Whitworth.
