No charges coming for Montana shooter who killed man on his doorstep

Associated Press

POLSON, Mont. – Lake County Attorney Steve Eschenbacher says he doesn’t believe he has the evidence needed to charge a Montana man who shot and killed another man after he appeared in the middle of the night on his doorstep.

The Missoulian reported that Eschenbacher on Tuesday announced no charges are coming for the man after two months of evidence gathering and a shooting reenactment couldn’t justify a crime.

Johnny McKeever is accused of showing up at the man’s house drunk in September and banging on the door hard enough to crack the door frame.

Eschenbacher said McKeever punched the man in the eye when he opened the door holding a handgun. The man told police the gun fired as he fell backward from the punch.

Authorities believe McKeever wanted to confront his estranged wife, who was living with the man.
