Belmont defeats Gonzaga women despite Jill Barta’s 20-20 game

LAS VEGAS — Belmont defeated Gonzaga 71-63 at the Play4Kay Showcase, overcoming Jill Barta’s 21 points and 22 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Though Gonzaga led 15-11 after the first quarter, the Lions took a 36-25 halftime lead and maintained their advantage in the second half. An 11-0 run in the fourth quarter drew Gonzaga within striking range but Belmont held on for the victory.

Gonzaga was hurt by 2 for 18 shooting from 3-point distance.

Zykera Rice scored 12, her season high, for the Bulldogs and Laura Stockton added 10.

Emma Stach and Jessie Loera had four assists each, and GU shot 41 percent while holding Belmont to 35 percent from the field.

Gonzaga plays Kent State at 3 p.m. on Friday.
