North Spokane man charged with rape, unlawful imprisonment, after online date

A North Spokane County man has been charged with rape and unlawful imprisonment after a woman reported an online date turned violent.

The investigation began on Nov. 11 and resulted with the arrest of Torrey T. Gambill, 35, who is charged with third-degree rape, assault, unlawful imprisonment and harassment, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department.

The woman called Deputy Jerry Moffett at 3:45 a.m. on Nov. 11 to report a sexual assault. She was being treated at a local hospital and said she met Gambill on the online-dating site Tinder a few weeks before the incident. During their first meeting, the woman said she and Gambill seemed to have a lot in common and the date resulted in the couple having consensual sex.

She agreed to meet with him on Nov. 11 and went to his home in the 12800 block of N. Palamino Lane in north Spokane County, according to sheriff’s records.

“Once at the residence, they began watching TV and later started to have consensual sex but Gambill became abusive,” deputies wrote. “After the sexual assault, he began to hit her and demand she follow his commands.”

During the assault, the woman told investigators she began to fear for her life after Gambill “grabbed her neck, hit, kicked and pushed (her) to the ground.” She also told investigators that Gambill “would not let her leave and threatened to kill and maim her, called her profane names and made derogatory statements about women.”

After about an hour of abuse, the woman said Gambill allowed her to leave his home, and she went to the hospital where she reported the incident.

Gambill, who is the younger brother of former local tennis star Jan-Michael Gambill, pleaded guilty in a different 2007 case to third-degree domestic violence assault and domestic violence harassment.
