Driver taken by helicopter to hospital after collision on Interstate 90 west of Sprague

A driver was taken by helicopter to a hospital after her vehicle was struck on the shoulder of Interstate 90 while she was standing near it.

A 2016 Chevy Malibu, driven by Brianna Harper, 21, and TJ Benavidez, 18, was stopped on the shoulder of the interstate about eight miles west of Sprague in Adams County Monday evening, Washington State Patrol troopers said in a news release. Both occupants were outside of the car and were standing near it.

Richard Boring, 76, driving a 2007 Chevy Silverado, apparently drifted onto the shoulder at about 7:45 p.m., striking the vehicle and Harper, who was standing near the driver’s side door.

Troopers said it does not appear as though Boring was under the influence.

“There’s no indication right now that there will be any criminal charges,” said trooper Jeff Sevigney, spokesman for the WSP. “Unfortunately, he just drifted off the road.”

Harper was flown by Life Flight helicopter to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center. Boring and Benavidez were not injured.
