Spokane Chiefs drop preseason opener to Portland

EVERETT – Reece Newkirk scored two goals and the Portland Winterhawks beat the Spokane Chiefs 7-3 in the Western Hockey League preseason opener for both teams at XFINITY Arena on Friday.

Kailer Yamamoto had a goal and an assist for the Chiefs, while Tyson Helgesen and Jeff Faith added goals for Spokane. The Chiefs managed 29 shots on goal.

Dawson Weatherill made 34 saves on 41 shots.

The Chiefs face Vancouver in Everett on Saturday at 3 p.m.
