Area roundup: Gonzaga volleyball finishes 2-1 at its invitational tournament

Tiyana Hallums recorded 10 kills but Gonzaga (2-4) was swept by Portland State (5-1) (25-17, 25-13, 25-20) in the final game of the Gonzaga Invitational on Saturday. Kaylee Loewen added nine kills and Faith Smith had 17 assists.

In the early game, Loewen had 11 kills and the Zags swept Nevada (25-16, 25-18, 25-20).

Dartmouth 3, Eastern Washington 2: Ashley Seiler had 18 kills with 12 digs but Eastern Washington (1-5) fell to Dartmouth (1-2) (25-18, 15-25, 22-25, 25-15, 15-8) at the Cal Classic in Berkeley, California. Regan Harr had 30 assists with 19 digs for the Eagles.

Earlier in the day, Seiler had 13 kills and Megan LaFond added 16 digs but the Eagles were swept by host California (4-1) (25-19, 25-20, 25-21).

Gustavus Adolphus 3, Whitworth 0: Gracie Meiners had 26 assists with nine digs but Whitworth (2-2) was swept by No. 24 Gustavus Adolphus (3-0) (25-16, 25-13, 25-21) at the Oregon Trail Classic in Newberg, Oregon. Corrine Bell led the Pirates with nine kills.

In the first game of the day, Cassandra Mendoza had 22 kills and 10 digs but Augsburg (3-0) outlasted the Pirates in five games (25-22, 25-18, 33-35, 19-25, 15-9).

North Idaho 2, Umpqua 0: North Idaho (7-2) swept Umpqua (4-6) (25-23, 25-19) at the Highline Tournament in Des Moines, Washington.

Men’s soccer

CC Spokane 2, Tacoma 0: Jesus Meraz-Rodriguez had a pair of goals and CC Spokane (3-1-1) shut out Tacoma (3-2) 2-0 in a nonconference game at Spokane Falls CC. Zach Babinski made one save for the clean sheet.

North Idaho 3, Everett 0: Armando Perez scored twice and North Idaho (1-3) blanked visiting Everett (1-3-1) 3-0 in a nonconference game. Cade Roske added a goal for the Cardinals. Tanner Sayer made five saves and Luis Hernandez made three in a half of work apiece for the shutout.

Women’s soccer

Denison 2, Whitworth 1: McKenzie Hemp’s header in the 83rd minute made it a one-goal game but Whitworth (0-2) couldn’t find the equalizer and lost to Denison (1-1) 2-1 in a nonconference game in Wheaton, Illinois. Jenna Rogers made four saves and Sienna Tanner made three for the Pirates.

CC Spokane 3, Tacoma 1: Molly Theis broke a 1-1 tie and CC Spokane (2-2) beat Tacoma (2-3) 3-1 in a nonconference game at Spokane Falls CC. Jamie Fassler and Shannon Frucci added goals and Michelle Czarapata made seven saves for the Sasquatch.

North Idaho 8, Everett 1: Marisol Guerrero and Linnea Pretzer scored three goals apiece and North Idaho (2-2) routed visiting Everett (1-4) 8-1 in a nonconference game. Chelsea Love scored twice and added an assist. Kinzie Hunter made three saves in the first half.

Hockey

Hayden Ostir scored twice and the Spokane Chiefs (1-1) beat the Vancouver Giants () 3-1 in a Western Hockey League preseason game at XFINITY Arena in Everett. Rykr Cole added a goal while Ethan McIndoe and Ty Smith earned assists. Declan Hobbs made 18 saves while Donovan Buskey was 10 of 11 as the pair split time in net.
